Meet Elysian & Nimbus - new to the lumbar cushion family
By the norsu team | 6 min read
A great lumbar cushion does more than fill a space - it finishes a bed. It's the piece that pulls the layers together, adds a moment of softness at the front, and quietly signals that someone has made the bed, not just thrown the quilt on top.
This month we're welcoming a brand new addition to our norsu Studio lumbar collection: Elysian. Designed to sit alongside our existing line-up - Sculpt, Align, Balance and Eden - Elysian completes a curated palette of five cushions that work as a family. Layer them across master, guest, and kids' rooms, or rotate them through the seasons. Together they share enough tonal DNA to feel cohesive - and enough personality to give each room a voice of its own.
The collection
Six lumbars, one family
Each lumbar in the norsu Studio collection sits in the same tonal world - soft, considered, easy to mix. Elysian and Nimbus are the newest siblings, joining Sculpt, Align, Balance and Eden in a line-up designed to layer effortlessly.

How to style
Layering a lumbar on the bed
There's a small ritual to making a bed look styled rather than stuffed. Here's the order we follow in every norsu Design shoot - three simple steps, no special skill required.
01
Start with a clean canvas
Fold your quilt back.
Before you place a single cushion, fold your quilt back roughly a third of the way down the bed. This exposes the fitted sheet and creates space for the layers to come. A bed without this fold always looks crowded - with it, every cushion sits flat and feels intentional.
02
Layer back to front
Build your layers.
Stand your sleeping pillows upright against the headboard first. Then place two 60 x 60 cm norsu cushions in front of them - they sit beautifully against the standing pillows and give your bed shape and depth. Sleeping pillows at the back, decorative pair at the front. That's the foundation.
03
The finishing touch
Place your lumbar at the front.
Centre your lumbar in front of the 60 x 60s - this is the piece that lifts the whole arrangement from "made" to styled. Give it a quick karate-chop down the middle if you like a softer silhouette, or leave it plump and structural. Either way, the bed is done.
If you prefer minimal
Skip the pair, keep the lumbar.
If you're after a quieter, more pared-back look, skip the 60 x 60s altogether. Stand your sleeping pillows against the headboard, then place the lumbar directly in front of them. Two layers, no fuss, and just as considered - particularly beautiful in a guest room or a minimalist bedroom where the bedhead does most of the talking.
How to style
How to style a lumbar cushion on your sofa
A great lumbar does more than fill a gap - it creates a cleaner, more elevated look. Whether you're a minimalist or love a layered cushion combo, these simple styling tips will help you get it right every time.
01
Start with your largest cushions
Place your largest squares first.
Place your largest square cushions in the corners of the sofa first. These create the foundation of your arrangement and provide the height and structure for everything that follows.
02
Layer in your supporting cushions
Build depth in front.
If you’re using multiple cushions, add your smaller squares or feature cushions in front. Mix texture, pattern and colour for depth, but keep your palette cohesive for a more considered look.
03
Finish with the lumbar
Place the lumbar in a hero position.
Place your lumbar cushion so it becomes a hero. Position it so it doesn't compete with your existing cluster, but rather compliments it. For a more relaxed, designer feel, place it slightly off-centre on your sofa.
Tip
Don’t overfill your sofa.
A lumbar works best when it has room to breathe. If your sofa is already crowded with cushions, remove one or two squares and let the lumbar become the hero.

Which lumbar is you?
A closer look at each cushion in the collection - the rooms they suit, the cushions and linen they love to live with, and the kind of styler that gravitates to them.
01 - Sculpt
For the neutral lover.
Calm | Considered | Tone-on-tone
Sculpt is the quiet hero of the lumbar family - soft, textural, and grounded in a warm neutral palette. It's the cushion for a styler who loves a tonal bed: oatmeal linen, ivory quilts, brushed brass and natural timber. Pair it with our 60 x 60s in oat or stone for a layered look that whispers rather than shouts.
Shop Sculpt
Pairs beautifully with
Baya Juno Cushion in Mulberry - for a deeper tonal accent

Linen quilt in oat, sand or natural flax

02 - Align
For the soft romantic.
Warm | Earthy | Sun-faded
Align brings warmth to the collection without ever feeling loud. Its soft, lived-in tones sit perfectly in a bedroom that draws on terracotta, clay, dusty rose and faded burgundy - the kind of room that feels like late afternoon light, year round. It's our pick for a primary bedroom that's romantic but never sweet.
Shop Align
Pairs beautifully with
Forma Gaia Cushion in Blush - the matching tonal anchor
Forma Elysian Cushion in Reversible Blush, 60x60cm - layers beautifully with Align
Baya Cromwell Throw Blanket in Blush - soft, warming finish
Linen quilt in clay, rust or faded rose
Suits warm modern, French country, lived-in romantic interiors
03 - Balance
For the colour confident.
Bold | Graphic | Anchored
Balance is for the styler who isn't afraid of a moment. Its deeper, more graphic personality holds its own in rooms with statement art, contrasting linen and richer tones - burgundy, sage, ink. Use it as the visual anchor on the bed and let the rest of the room build around it. Best in a primary bedroom or a teen room with a real point of view.
Shop Balance
Pairs beautifully with
Forma Lume Cushion in Natural, 60x60cm - to ground the bolder tones
Forma Pure Cushion in Reversible Natural, 60x60cm - soft contrast against the green

04 - Eden
For the nature-led.
Verdant | Grounded | Organic
Eden brings the garden in. Its soft, green-leaning palette feels like a quiet morning in the country - sage, olive, eucalyptus, weathered timber. It's the cushion for a styler who layers natural textures, loves a touch of greenery on the bedside, and wants their bedroom to feel rooted in nature rather than driven by trend.

05 - Elysian | The newcomer
For the quiet dreamer.
Airy | Soft | Light-filled
The newest member of the norsu Studio lumbar family - Elysian feels like morning light. It's the softest of the five, made for bedrooms that lean light and airy: whitewashed linen, soft blush, faded blue, plenty of negative space. It bridges the collection beautifully, sitting just as easily next to Sculpt as it does next to Align. Perfect for a guest room, a primary in a coastal home, or a styling refresh when you want something gentler on the eye.

06 - Nimbus | The newcomer
For the atmospheric soul.
Hazy | Moody | Soft-edged
Nimbus is the most atmospheric lumbar in the family - soft and hazy, like the light just after rain. Where Elysian leans bright and airy, Nimbus brings a quieter, dusk-leaning palette that anchors a room without ever weighing it down. It's the cushion for a styler who loves a moodier neutral: greyed taupes, smoky linen, weathered timber, soft black accents. Beautiful in a primary bedroom that leans contemporary, or a city apartment where the light shifts through the day.
