Framed to Perfection: A Room Refresh for a Young Creative

Shop HARVEY'S ROOM
If you’re in your tween mum era, then read on. This blog is for you.
Somewhere between empty chip packets on the floor and fully formed opinions on aftershave ("Mum, it's called cologne!"), food and what absolutely cannot be moved, my tween son Harvey’s bedroom has become his own little world. A place for growing interests, creative exploration, busy schedules and, let’s be honest, a fair bit of clutter (yes I'm a fraud on Insta).
Finding the balance between letting them express who they’re becoming and keeping some level of order can feel like a daily negotiation. Add in sport, social plans and school commitments and suddenly we’re all wishing for slightly better organisational skills (and much faster tidy-ups!).
If this sounds familiar, you’re going to love The Tween Edit. It’s all about genuinely practical pieces that still feel stylish, considered and grown-up enough to evolve with them.

Elevating the space with Mustard Made's "The Mixer"

We’ve long loved Mustard Made Lockers for their colour, durability and clever storage, but The Mixer feels like the perfect step into tween territory.

The fluted glass instantly gives it a more mature feel while still allowing their favourite things to be seen (and celebrated). In Harvey’s room, it’s become the ideal home for his growing (excessive yes I know) aftershave collection, proudly displayed, easily organised and, importantly, contained.

Why we love it

  • Powder coated steel in a beautiful collection of colours
  • Fluted glass doors for display without visual overwhelm
  • Lockable (to keep nosey siblings at bay)
  • Adjustable shelves that grow with their needs
  • Wall attachment points for peace of mind
  • Stylish enough to move beyond the tween years

It’s one of those pieces that feels equal parts practical and special, which is exactly what this age calls for.

Creativity at its Finest with The Storyboard

Getting tweens involved in styling their own space? Game changer.

The Mustard Made Storyboard is one of those pieces that quietly earns its place in a tween room. It’s a bold, magnetic noticeboard with a powder-coated finish in the same beautiful colours as the lockers, and the flexibility to hang it portrait or landscape depending on how the space works.

What we love most is how it encourages ownership. It gives tweens a dedicated place to organise plans, display keepsakes and keep important things visible without clutter taking over.

In our home, it’s become the go-to spot for invites, certificates, reminders and all those little things that would otherwise end up lost under a bed or buried in a drawer.

Why it works so well

  • Magnetic surface for easy changes as interests and schedules shift
  • Powder-coated finish in mix-and-match colours to suit the Mustard lockers
  • Two ways to hang, portrait or landscape
  • Sturdy, durable and no assembly required

From keepsakes to reminders, it’s a simple and practical way to help tweens take ownership of their space and their plans — without it feeling forced or over-structured.

Let Their Passion Shine

One of the nicest shifts in the tween years is watching their interests start to take shape and finding simple ways to reflect that in their space.

For Harvey, a growing love of photography has naturally become part of his room. Displaying his own prints has been a really positive way to acknowledge that passion and give it a sense of importance and permanence. It’s also been a quiet confidence boost, seeing his work treated with the same care as any other artwork in our home.

The norsu Studio Gallery Box Frame in sage has been the perfect fit. Its clean lines and soft colour feel calm and considered, allowing the prints themselves to shine without overwhelming the room. It’s a beautiful way to frame tween interests as they evolve, whether that’s photography, illustration, typography or graphic art.

Harvey’s prints are now available to shop at norsu, something we’re incredibly proud to share!

Teach Life Organisational Schools

How important is it for tweens to start taking responsibility for their schedules? Very.

When we discovered the peel-and-stick removable wall planners by Organising Life Beautifully, it felt like one of those ‘why didn’t this exist sooner’ moments.

No wall damage. Just peel, stick, plan and move when life changes (which, let’s face it, it does constantly).

We love having Harvey’s schedule separate from his keepsakes and collections, but still somewhere highly visible. Keeping planning and organisation distinct from his favourite things has worked so well for him (and made mornings a whole lot smoother for us).

Why we love them

  • Stick to smooth surfaces like walls, doors or cupboards
  • Repositionable as schedules shift
  • Encourages independence and routine
  • Visually calm and easy to use

It’s a small change that makes a big difference, for them and for us.
