Mustard Made Lockers Review: An Honest Australian Guide

We've stocked Mustard Made for years, and there are lockers in our Malvern East showroom you can open, close and stand next to right now. So treat this as a well-informed stockist's guide rather than an independent review — but we've included the things we get asked about most, including the parts people find annoying.

What is a Mustard Made locker, actually?

Powder-coated steel storage, designed in the UK, sold flat-packed and finished in a range of colours you don't normally get in furniture. The whole body is smooth, matte and magnetic — which matters more than it sounds, because it turns the side of a locker into a noticeboard, a spot for magnetic hooks, or somewhere to stick artwork in a kids' room.

They're not office lockers. There's no institutional grey, the proportions are domestic, and they're built to sit in a living room or a bedroom rather than a corridor.

Which Mustard Made locker should I buy?

The names aren't self-explanatory, so here's the plain-English version. Six of the seven main lockers are shown in Sage, so you can compare the shapes properly.

The Shorty — $229

One door, two adjustable shelves, one hook. The bedside-table one. It's also the only model where you choose which way the door opens, which matters if it's going into a corner or beside a bed.

The Skinny — $419

One tall door with a removable hanging rail, four adjustable shelves and two hooks. This is what people buy when they need a wardrobe but don't have room for a wardrobe. Good in a rental, a nursery, or a bedroom with no built-ins.

The Lowdown — $419

Two doors, two adjustable shelves. Same height as the Shorty but wider and slightly shallower. Console, TV unit, or under a window. Choose it when you want length rather than height.

The Midi — $499

Two doors, four adjustable shelves. The workhorse. Toy cupboard, hallway catch-all, pantry overflow.

The Standard — $649

Four separate lockable doors, four adjustable shelves, a hook inside each door. Genuinely useful in a shared space where everyone wants their own compartment — a family mudroom, a studio, a shared office.

The Twinny — $799

Two doors, four adjustable shelves and two removable hanging rails. Effectively a double Skinny, and the closest thing in the range to a freestanding wardrobe.

The Collector — $1,199

The glass one, shown here in Chalk. Fluted glass panels in a metal frame with medallion handles. This is display furniture rather than storage furniture — for the things you want seen.

Two more round out the range. The Mixer ($699) is the low, wide one — two fluted glass doors, two adjustable shelves, adjustable feet and medallion handles. It works as a drinks cabinet, kitchen buffet or sideboard, and holds 40kg on top. The Kit ($349) is the odd one out, because it doesn't stand on the floor at all: it's a wall-mounted cabinet, a vintage medicine cabinet reimagined, with one adjustable shelf. Good above a basin, beside a desk, or anywhere you have wall but no floor.

What do you actually get inside?

Every locker has adjustable shelves, at least one hook, a lock with a custom keyring, air vents, cable holes and wall-attachment points. The wall fixing is worth taking seriously, particularly on the taller models in a house with children.

What we'd tell you before you order

This is the part people actually want, so here it is unvarnished.

They're made to order — allow up to two weeks

Mustard Made pieces are custom ordered. If you need storage this weekend, this isn't it.

They arrive flat-packed and you assemble them

No horror stories in our experience, but budget the time. A Twinny is not a ten-minute job.

No PO Box delivery

They have to go to a street address.

Colour is genuinely hard to judge on a screen

Even the brand says so. Sage, Olive and Slate in particular photograph differently to how they read in a room. Our colour guide covers all twelve, including which ones Australians actually buy — or come and look at them.

Steel is loud if you're careless

The doors have a satisfying weight to them, but a locker beside a bed in a light sleeper's room is worth a moment's thought.

Are Mustard Made lockers worth it?

Honestly, it depends what you're comparing them to.

Against flat-pack laminate storage at half the price, they cost more and always will. What you're paying for is a steel carcass that won't sag or swell, a colour range nobody else offers, and a piece that reads as furniture rather than storage.

Against solid timber furniture at a similar price, they're a different proposition — lighter, more portable, better in a rental, and far more colourful.

Where we'd say don't bother: if you want something that disappears into the room. These are not quiet pieces. Even Chalk and Slate have presence.

Where they earn their money: rentals, kids' and teens' rooms, home offices, entryways, and any room that needs storage and needs something to look at.
